Pre Writing: Students make a web of their current role models and their qualities or characteristics that make them a good role model.

Next students choose one role model to focus on and brainstorm to supply facts or anecdotes to support the qualities they want to highlight in their role models. Students work in pairs to discuss their role models and get feedback on what to include in their speeches, including things they admire about their role models and thangs they want to emulate about their role models.

Students are writing speeches about Emmet Smith, Kobe Bryant, Martin Luther King Jr. , their cousins, their friends and their parents.

Students write out their speeches, then write notes on 3x5 note cards to use. They rehearse their speeches in small groups and work on improving eye contact and intonation.

On day 5 students deliver their speeches for the class. Speeches will be videotaped and reviewed in class. They all critique constructively for each other in writing and share their critiques with the class. The critiques become a part of their portfolio, along with copies of the speech and note cards.

Comments
This is a great way for students to share some insights in a non threatening manner.

This lesson would work well for English classes.
Follow-Up
