Keywords: Welcome to School, Staff pictures, book making
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Art, Journalism, Photography
Grades K through 2
School: Pike County Primary School, Zebulon, GA
Planned By: Mimi Roberts
Original Author: Mimi Roberts, Zebulon
All the staff photos will be taken and made into a book with their names and job descriptions on them. The book would be divided into chapters for each grade level and other areas of the school. A map would be included to show where each of these areas are in the school, since the school is so large. A powerpoint presentation would be made from the book to be shown in the classroom and also on the web page.
The media specialist would work with a group of second graders in the spring of the school year. The students would take the pictures of the staff and write their job descriptions. They would help to place the pictures on the school map. They would make a large bulletin board that shows where everyone is. This would be used during Open House for the new school year. If there are staff changes, the changes in pictures could be made.
The students would organize the book into sections with an introduction written by them welcoming new students into the school. The book would be printed inhouse using card stock for the cover. Each new student to the school through the school year would receive a welcome book so they would know where everything is. Kindergarteners would get one at Open House so their parents can help them find the different parts of the school. As students transfer in they would receive a welcome book to their new school.
The students would do the writing, the organizing and taking of pictures. The media specialist would print the pages of the book. The students would colate the pages and put the book together. Many strands would be incorporated into this project. It would take several weeks to complete the task.
Comments
Students would get self-confidence in this project and they would help other students entering the school.

You could tie in math: like how many pages would the book have and how many books would they need to make. Art: how to design the page and what order to make it. Journalism: what should they include on teacher bios. This is just a few areas that could be used.
