Title: Hiring your yearbook staff
Long Term Objective:
• Students will hire their yearbook staff with the goal of efficiently and effectively producing a yearbook.
Other Considerations:
• This project develops student leadership skills.
• Students participate in the decision making process and are more invested in the outcome.
• Students learn the importance of collaboration
• Students see the “big picture” of publication, as well as the parts needed.
Activities
THE PROJECT: Students hire yearbook staff based on qualifications, interests, and experience.
INTRODUCTION: Prior to beginning of the project, students review various organizational charts to see how companies set up organizations. Students then set up a chart according to the tasks determined to publish a yearbook.
Students then create job descriptions and research qualifications, education, and demands of each position.
GETTING DOWN TO WORK: On the board, we will create a chart and determine all the aspects of a good manager and then assign points to each quality.
Students will apply for the top management position, usually called the managing editor and interviews will be conducted up front with the whole class. Each student will fill out the chart and assign points to each interviewee. The results will be tallied and the manager will be announced.
Hiring staff
• Five management positions will be created and report to the managing editor.
• The managing editor, along with the teacher, will hire the management staff.
• The five managers will create a hiring chart based on qualifications, experience, and interest.
• Each of the five managers will hire the remaining students
• .A verbal, written, and then a change of position will be established as the human resources process.

Follow-Up
