SOL Objective: 2.1, 2.4ab
- The students will explain how the contributions of ancient Egypt have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, inventions, the calendar, and written language.
- The students will develop map skills by locating Egypt on a world map.
- The students will understand the relationship between the environment and the culture of ancient Egypt.

Duration: 2 Weeks - 45 Minutes Daily

Day 1 and Day 2:
The students in my class will tell me anything that they know about Egypt. As a class we will make a KWL chart. I will read the book Ancient Egyptians by Jane Shuter. The students will locate and find Egypt on a world map and a globe. The students will locate important places on their maps of Africa.

Day 3:
I will show the class a Power Point on Egypt. The Power Point is interactive. There are several questions and links throughout the presentation. The students will copy important notes from the Power Point in their Social Studies notebooks. After the Power Point, the students will complete a comprehension activity.

Day 4:
The students will watch a United Streaming video on Egypt. The video will focus on ancient Egyptian inventions and architecture. Using my Smart Board, I will show my class several different pictures of the pyramids and the Sphinx.

Day 5:
As a class we will read 100 Things You Should Know About Ancient Egypt by Jane Walker. When we finish the story, everyone will make pyramids out of sugar cubes. They will decorate the paper under the pyramids to show the desert and the Nile River.

Day 6 and Day 7:
As a class we will go up to the computer lab. Each student will create their own Power Point on ancient Egypt. They will need to include inventions, hieroglyphics, architecture, geography, and other information they have learned about Egypt. The students will also create a thinking map about Egypt using the Kidspiration program on the computer.

Day 8:
I will teach a quick review lesson on hieroglyphics. Each child will paint their name in hieroglyphics. They will then decode their own special message that was written in hieroglyphics.

Day 9:
The students will work in small groups. They will each write and draw everything that they remember learning about. Each group will have large poster papers to write and draw their information. The groups will present their information to the rest of the class. After all of the groups present, we will play Jeopardy using the Smart Board.

Day 10: Assessment
The students will take their end-of-unit assessment on the computers.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
My reading groups read books about Egypt during the unit. We did an entire math lesson using Egyptian symbols instead of American numbers.
