Goals/Objectives

Following an introduction to the purposes and varieties of film, and an orientation to simple flip HD video cameras and editing software, students working in teams of 5, each with a facilitator, will develop a 60-second video addressing a supplied theme. Final productions will be judged, awarded, and linked to the website of the Tallahassee Film Festival.

Steps:

1) A three-hour facilitator orientation to goals, hardware, and software prior to student workshop
2) A six-hour Saturday workshop with a working lunch for a maximum of 50 students and 10- 12 facilitators

Process:

a) Orientation to goals of activity including the theme
b) Introduction to hardware, software, and supplies including flip cameras, storyboarding, production, editing,and final submission
c) Development of collaborative teams
d) Group work to produce and submit the 60-second film
e) Review and judging finished films in group setting (auditorium) using audience responders for judging
f) Awards and recognition
g) Evaluation of Workshop using audience responders
h) Post recognition: Winners linked on the Festival Website and recognized during the live Festival
Comments
This activity is the focus of the Tallahassee Film Festival's youth activity, and it represents the beginning of a series of film and digital-related educational activities for youth in the community. It is conducted for Leon County youth and is sponsored by the Tallahassee Film Festival in partnership with the Tallahassee Community College Division of Technology and Professional Programs and the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This activity incorporates a majority of the 21st Century Skills with special focus on collaboration and creativity, but it addresses writing and research skills. Themes for this activity can be adjusted to address most curricula.
Follow-Up
In addition to recognition on the Festival website and recognition during the festival of participants in this first workshop, it is expected that this beginning workshop will develop into a series with more advanced projects, additional filmmaking techniques, and additional software and hardware.
