School: John Paul Stevens High School, San Antonio, TX
Planned By: Anna Sexton
Original Author: Anna Sexton, San Antonio
Objectives:
ESL/LEP learners will develop a deeper understanding of the English language vocabulary that they will encounter on an everyday basis at school.
Theatre- Creative expression/performance: the student applies design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills.
Video Technology- Communication: the student formats digital information for appropriate and effective communication. Solving problems: the student uses research skills and electronic communication, with appropriate supervision, to create new knowledge.

Project Overview:
Flipping out for Education involves the drama and video students, but could be extended to included English classes or Gifted and Talented classes depending on the courses available. The classes will work together to create informative videos that will teach ESL/LEP learners about the everyday procedures they may encounter at the school. The videos will immerse the ESL and LEP learners into the school’s culture and expose them to the wide variety of English language vocabulary. The project will also accommodate several learning styles. The visual learner can watch the videos while the auditory learner can listen to the vocabulary over and over again. These videos will become the “personal tutors” for ESL/LEP learners. The students will be able to watch and listen to the videos multiple times to gain a better understanding of the vocabulary and procedures they encounter on a daily basis. Some of the video projects can include: “Visiting the School Nurse”, “Attending Tutoring”, “Navigating the Cafeteria”, “Dress Code Do’s and Don’ts”, “How to get Involved in a Club”, etc.

Step 1: Students from the drama, GT or English classes will meet with the ESL and LEP teachers to outline video ideas and vocabulary terms that need to be addressed in the ESL classroom.

Step 2: The students will write and perform scripts that teach the ESL and LEP students about the school procedures.

Step 3: The video classes will meet with the script writers to discuss the video projects that need to be filmed. They will video record the students performing their scripts then edit and produce the footage. The videos will be formatted so they can be shown in the classroom or used on iPods.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This can easily be integrated with multiple classes depending on course availability. If you do not have a video production class, then work with a multimedia teacher or other class like English or Gifted and Talented can be the script writers and movie makers.
Follow-Up
Ask the ESL/LEP learners to summarize what they have learned. They can create flash cards for vocabulary words that they encountered in the videos that they didn't understand.
