School: Seiberling Elementary School, Akron, OH
Planned By: Tracy Martin
Original Author: Tracy Martin, Akron
1) Students will use the internet/smart boards to explore/research many concepts relating to geometry.
2) Students will keep graphic organizers to organize webquests, internet sites, and information related to geometry.
3) Students will use this information to locate examples of geometry in their environment (local architecture, signs, billboards, neighborhoods, nature, etc).
4) Using a flip cam, students will film these examples and provide explanations of their samples.
5) Using PowerPoint, students will upload their videos and create lessons to teach to other students about specific geometry concepts they researched.
6) Each student will present their PowerPoint to the class to teach other students about specific geometric concepts.
7) The students will create math stations for a community event in which community members and families can go to each station to learn about geometry. Some of these stations may be interactive smart board stations.
Comments
Besides the Flip Cam, our school already has a portable laptop station, wireless connection, smart boards, and other items needed for this project.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
In social studies, we research items about our community, cultures, and history. This project would relate to studying community architecture and culture. This lesson could also be related to Earth Science when researching geometry in nature.
Follow-Up
Community event for a Math Night to present geometry discoveries and for students to teach community members and families about geometry in our community.
