School: Cambridge Spgs Jr Sr High Sch, Cambridge Spgs, PA
Planned By: Vickie Schultz
Original Author: Vickie Schultz, Cambridg Spgs
In this book trailer video podcast, you will pick a book of your choice from the books provided by the elementary school which introduce certain social skills to 1st graders. You must research the author of the book and find out the other books the author has written as well as any awards they have received for their writing. You will also include the type of genre the author typically writes. You must include a summary of your personal reaction to the book, quotes from famous authors or reviewers, recommended reading age, and a link to the authors website. This information should all be typed in the blog where you will put your podcast. View the sample at the below link:

http://schools.penncrest.org/spapodcast/?p=1098

You
will need to take a picture of the cover of the book to post on the Blog Page also. Be sure to use macro mode and to turn off the flash to avoid a glare on the book. The description of the book must be in the movie/puppet show you create for the book. You need to create at least three social skills questions to go along with the book.

The book trailer will be worth 40 points.

Ten (10) points will be awarded for the description/script/production of the book--be sure to grab the audiences attention and make them want to read the book. Be sure to speak loudly and use inflection in your voice.

Five (5) Points will be Awarded for videoing the movie with a flip video camera and creating the Movie in iMovie (be sure there is an intro slide, a credits slide, transitions (if possible), and music.) and generating a embed code. (The Movie must be uploaded into viddler or you tube to get an embed code to use in your post. I recommend viddler if you do not already have a you tube account. It cannot be listed as private because we will not be able to view it on our site--another reason I prefer viddler.)

Five (5) Points will be awarded for creating props and/or using green screen.

One (1) point will be awarded for each of the following in your write up:

listing the author
any awards the book and/or author has received
the recommended reading age
a quote from the book and/or quote(s) from famous reviewers
your personal reaction to the book
other books the author has written
link to authors website

One (1) point will be awarded for including the picture of the book cover on the blog.

Three (3) Points will be awarded for creating at least three social skills questions that the book addresses and adding them to your post. These should just be simple audio files--they do not need to have music or sound effects.

Four (4) points will be awarded for posting the blog correctly (typed portion--using proper grammar & sentence structure, picture of book, video podcast itself, placed in book trailer category).

Five (5) points will be awarded for your presentation of the book trailer and interactions with the 1st grade class.
Comments
This lesson incorporates tons of technology as well as research and creativity. It also empowers the high school students by allowing them to create a project that will be used and having them interact with elementary students. The collaboration between the high school and elementary school students is priceless.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This lesson includes the librarian introducing research on the book, the business education teacher introducing the technology concepts for the book trailer and the 1st grade teacher bringing her class to interact with the students and their videos and then using the social skills questions with her class as well as with the elementary librairan to help the students sign the books out to read.
Follow-Up
High School students complete forum questions on the projects: (See below)

This is a project we did with Mr. Wright in the library. What did you think of the research about the author and the book? Were you familiar with these resources before now?

This is your second podcast. Did you find it easier. Did you like the audio story podcast or the book trailer video podcast better? Why or Why not?

Did you like having the elementary students come over to hear your podcast? Do you think they will sign out your books?

Do you think I should keep this project and/or are there any changes that you would like to see made with it?

Lastly, what would you do differently if you were to create another video podcast? What were your strong points and your weak points?

The Elementary Students will have discussions on the soical skills introduced in the books and posted on the website and will sign the books out to read.
