Lesson Overview (pgs 40-41): Geograpy Skills

Lesson Focus/Purpose: This lesson’s purpose is to have students understand the difference between latitude and longitude and to be able to identify latitude and longitude on a map or globe.

Procedure:
Write latitude and longitude on the board.
Define each word on the board.
Break the students into five groups. 7 mins for each group with 1 min for rotating.
Group one will identify the 5 stars on the globe, and write down the long and lat locations.
Group two will have to figure out what countries are located at what spots on a globe.
Group three will work on the website: http://www.abcya.com/childrens_latitude_and_longitude_practice.htm
Group
four will work on page 40-41 in their book. Read and do the reviewing the skill on page 41.
Group five will play GeoSafari.
Materials:
Two globes
Computer
Social Studies book
End of Lesson Reminder: Even though we have GPS to help us get from place to place, we still need to have these Geography Skills to help us in life.
