1. Give each student a coyy of the same photo and ask the students to write down these five things.
1. Who is in the photo?
2. What are they doing?
3. When did this happen?
4. Where did this take place?
5. Gather all these facts and put into sentences.
6. Edit the sentences to throw out unnecessary words and change the order so the caption doesn't begin with students' names.
7. Add something interesting to the caption like a quote or funny saying to get the reader's attention.
8. Compare all the captions and discuss the different ways to write captions without stating names first.
Example, After the band's halftime performance, the seniors celebrated by tossing their hats in the air.

Practice and discuss caption writing using various types of photos for all areas found in a yearbook.

You can cut out photos from a newspaper or use extra photos not used in the yearbook.
