Dear Sir/Madam:
Novel to Movie Project

I have been teaching in the West Contra Costa Unified School District for over ten years. I presently teach English Language Development at Helms Middle School in San Pablo. As you may know, our school is in a high poverty community, and the majority of our students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch Program. About 75 % of those students have CST California Standardized Test scores of basic, below basic, and far below basic. We also have a high number of English Learners who attend Helms.

English classes were voted the “most boring” subject taught at Helms as indicted by a student created survey. Students suggested that teachers need to have more fun, creative activities and projects. I actually could not agree more, I aspire to teach in a much more creative and engaging way. To that end, this is my project: I would like to have students make movies out of our key Literature Books. We currently read three major pieces of literature each year, this year the books are: Seedfolks, On My Honor, and Island of the Blue Dolphin. The books are also used as catalyst to writing district assessment essays.

The objectives in the lesson plan I have developed for this project will focus on comprehension of the literature, characterization, storyboarding plots, writing dialogue, and learning the art and technology of film-making by translating a novel into a digital movie. This project addresses one of the STEM curriculum areas. This is a list of the needed materials and budget for this project. I will send this letter to more than one possible sponsor, so if you can only support only a small part of this project, it would always be greatly appreciated.
Your company can help by providing funds in the form of a grant or by donating equipment needed for this project. Our tax-exempt IRS number is 680-00-0495.
Thank you in advance for your support.
With gratitude,
Consuelo Lara
