I teach second grade in a community where majority of my students come from a low-income family. I have implemented a lot of technology into our classroom curriculum and learning. The students take their learning to a much deeper level when technology is included in their learning. Within the last month, I have gotten my second graders using gmail, as well as google docs. They absolutely love doing this! Many of my students do not have computer access at home, so this is sometimes the only experience they get with such technology. We utilize Khan Academy for extra practice in math. Khan narrows down on each individual student's skills they have mastered and what skills they still need to work on. As students master second grade skills, this program pushes them onto third grade skills. This is a great tool for my students who need that extra challenge. Khan Academy also provides videos to assist students with a skill or concept. We also utilize Moby Max for various subjects and skills. Just like Khan, Moby Max breaks each student down individually to meet their specific needs on skills. The only obstacle we have encountered is our outdated, slow, and unreliable classroom computers. This cuts back on the time students can work on their tasks. My students are hoping to raise money to purchase some newer Acer Chromebooks (which would go great with our constant use of gmail) to help implement more technology and resources for our classroom.
