The students and teachers at Corkery Elementary School are a hardworking, dedicated, and resilient bunch! Unfortunately, a lack of technology is prominent throughout the school; particularly in the special education classrooms. I currently teach a special education resource room for grades K-2, for both monolingual and bilingual students. With such a wide range of grades, disabilities, and the need for instruction in two languages in one classroom- technology, particularly iPads, are a much needed resource that could increase my ability to differentiate assignments and instruction for my students. Our classroom currently has 2 desktop computers, a teacher purchased projector, and a personal laptop that is taken to the classroom every day. This technology is not sufficient to meet the needs of my students. Many of them are emergent readers, writers, and mathematicians that rely on me to read directions to them, scribe their responses, and work one-on-one with them to ensure understanding. Through the use of video recording, voice recording apps, dictation apps, and educational apps on iPads my students could greatly increase their independence in the classroom. For example, the students could use iPad apps such as Dragon Dictation to orally respond, then write responses to their school work. The availability of iPads in the classroom would also allow me to video record individual directions and assignments on iPads that specifically target student needs and learning styles. The opportunities for active engagement and possibilities for student growth with technology in the classroom are immense! I currently serve 12 students, but our school has an 11.5% population of diverse learners and with this fundraiser I wish to raise enough money to provide iPads to each special education student at our school. Our students struggle greatly because of their disabilities and also because of their status as English Language Learners, and I believe that they deserve any and all opportunities that can allow them to advance academically.
