Our school would like to join the growing "Maker Movement” and adopt personalized project based learning. Makerspaces (also sometimes called Tinkering Labs, Design Labs, and Creation Spaces) are popping up in public libraries, museums, and schools everywhere.

So what is “Making”?In the most general terms, it is learning through doing. It is individualized, project based, hands-on and open ended. It can be low-tech or high-tech, however Makerspaces and STEM education tend to be closely connected.

The focus of the Maker Movement is the mindset, though, and not the physical space in which it might be taking place. In the Makerspace at our school, our focus will be on the design process. Historically, our students are used to being told what their projects should look like and what information it should contain. They have little or no say in the topics they are studying, and they rarely get a chance to take control of their own education. This is the hope for the Maker Movement: students design projects - possibly a solution to some problem or something they want to learn more about - they make a plan for getting the information they need, and they create a project that demonstrates their learning. Our funding will help to begin the process of acquireing the technology needed to get our makerspace up and running.
