As the eager students file into my room, I see them struggling to find a seat. “Here. Have my chair,” I offer as I have thirty-three students in a single English class. No worries, I hope, we’ll get more desks for tomorrow. We are at an all-time remaining low for per-pupil spending in the state of Arizona, and for a child in poverty, even a book is a luxury item. My students live in poverty. They come to school wearing the same dirty clothes they did yesterday. Some are homeless, and some take the city bus home from their activities at night because their parents whom “they never see” work evenings. School is their home; school is their stability. Eighty-five percent of our students are on the free-and reduced lunch program, and here I am asking them to try to following along while I read Shakespeare to them. With a document camera in my room I will be able to increase their learning substantially. This visible piece of technology will help my students see the words as I guide them through literature. Thank you for your support to education.
