In August of 2014 Destin Middle School launched a special elective class for fifth-grade students called, “Introduction to Engineering”. This elective class, in addition to being the only one of its kind in this area, has become a favorite of students and parents alike. Our “Introduction to Engineering” curriculum teaches students the engineering design process for problem solving as they learn about many different engineering fields. Students are visited by many local engineers who donate their time and share their excitement for engineering with the children. The children see how interesting and varied engineering is and, more importantly, that it is within their grasp. While students enjoy all of the activities, the introduction to computer science weeks, which include an introduction to coding and robotics, are a favorite of most and have prompted them to ask for more.

“I think everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.” – Steve Jobs, founder of Apple

As an expansion of our STEM education offerings we have added an “Introduction to Coding and Robotics” semester elective class for our sixth- through eighth-grade students for the 2015-2016 school year. The number of students registering for the “Introduction to Coding and Robotics” course has far exceeded our expectations. The next step will be to add an advanced version of the class for the 2016-2017 school year. The “Advanced Coding and Robotics” course will enable students to expand their coding and robotics skills and be part of the Destin Middle School FLL Robotics team, if they so desire.

It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer. --Albert Einstein

The Vision of the Okaloosa County School System is to, “Maximize educational systems that empower students to successfully transition into a globally competitive society.” At Destin Middle School we take this mission to heart and understand that we play an integral part in achieving the goal. Computer science is about problem solving, critical thinking, and persistence. By offering these courses to our students we are equipping them with tools they will be able to use throughout their educational and professional careers.

“An understanding of computer science is becoming increasingly essential in today’s world. Our national competitiveness depends upon our ability to educate our children-and that includes our girls-in this critical field.” – Sheryl Sandberg, COO Facebook

We are asking you to invest in the future by partnering with us to make this vital educational experience possible for our children. We have students that are excited and ready to take this course. Over 21% of our sixth- through eighth-grade population has listed it as their 1st or 2nd semester choice for the 2016-2017 school year. We have parents who are excited about their children having such an opportunity. And, we have a teacher who is passionate about providing this opportunity to Destin Middle School’s students. We appreciate any monetary donation you may be able to provide to help us purchase the needed computers and robots. By helping us purchase the equipment needed for these classes you will be ensuring that our students with the means to be successful in whichever career path they choose. Your generosity will impact students for years to come.
