I am looking to take the the Hollister Elementary Library to the next level. By adding 3D Printers to our library, we can begin incorporating PBL, or Project-Based Learning units, into our library time. Project-Based Learning is a process in which students use technology and work collaboratively to solve real-world problems that we are experiencing locally, nationally, or worldwide. Students will begin the PBL process by empathising with those that are experiencing the problem. We will build empathy by discovering the thoughts, feelings, and physical needs of those that are facing the issues. After that, our students will define the problem, or determine a more specific focus of the problem at hand. Students will then ideate, or collaboratively brainstorm multiple solutions to the problem. Next, we will iterate, or build a sample (through sketching) based on one of the ideas for solving the problem. Then, students will then take their sketches and ideas and use 3D printing software to design a physical solution to the problem at hand. We will need laptops to use the 3d printing software, and to hook up to the 3d printer. After the student’s design is created with the printer, they will then test their solution. Testing will reveal what works, and what does not work. The designers can then improve upon their existing work and re-test as needed. Finally, students will share their solutions with their peers, school administration, and community members. When the students share their work with their classmates and community members, it allows students to learn and develop public speaking and social skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. By having a physical copy of their design, students will be able to identify the uses and thinking behind each part. It will also provide each student with a token of their experience that they can look back on for years to come. With these 3D Printers, we are looking to help our next great engineer, coder, inventor, or public speaker reach their fullest potential. We also want to provide students with a global perspective, that will allow them to see the world from outside of our small town. We want our students to “begin with the end in mind,” to know that they can do great things in this world. These printers could be life changing for many of our impoverished students, and we would greatly appreciate this opportunity.
