One of the best ways to educate students across all skills is via the means of video and television. While many teachers and parents are probably under the impression that their child or student is NOT learning much when watching TV, in the right circumstances a video, TV show or a news bulletin can provide a fun alternative to regular classroom activities. Videos, and television programs provide students with realistic conversation and dialogues, which aid listening skills by offering a diverse range of accents for the students to hear. Another advantage is that the majority of videos and TV programs use relatively simple language, and they provide the viewers with a clear explanation. By using video in my classroom I can help my students to connect the mental image we have discussed in class notes and readings with a visual they can connect to, and this helps make the material relevant and entertaining to them. Video can be used in a number of ways to add that all-important element of depth to the classroom. When using videos I give my students video guides. These guides require my students to follow along and collect information that will be used in follow up activities such as writing assignments. Students' reflections become clearer as they connect cause and effect patterns throughout history. One of the most fundamental goals for students in a history classroom is to see and make connections. Video allows them to get that big picture. To implement I need equipment. Currently our school is dealing with older technology that has reached the end of its life expectancy. I have used video in my classroom successfully for many years, however my overhead projector is failing. Another problem is funding for bulbs for this projector that have to be replaced frequently and cost in the hundreds of dollars for just one bulb. The purchase of a large flat screen TV would stop the need for this costly equipment to be replaced and the constant need for new bulbs. The benefits would be years of maintenance free technology for my classroom and students. This equipment if funded would be installed immediately by our county's technology department. The videos and guides I already have and use as much as possible with my current classroom equipment. I purchased the videos myself, or I look for free educational clips on locations such as Teacher-Tube. My biggest obstacle faced in implementation is new technology equipment. A new overhead mounted projector would cost over $4000 dollars, and would still have bulbs that would constantly need to be replaced. If this project is funded it would give a very cost effective alternative to help me meet the needs of my students for many years to come without the expense of continuously replacing bulbs that the school just does not have the funds to replace.
