The English department plans to integrate two class sets of Google Chromebooks into daily instruction. The English teacher assigns daily bellwork; with access to classroom Chromebooks, all of the bell work will be on Google Classroom so that she has easy access. Daily access to Google Chromebooks will allow students to work and collaborate on longer term projects via Google Classroom. Additionally, students will have access to digital resources and educational tools, including ETS’s Criterion. Criterion is a web-based instructional tool that helps students plan, write, and revise their essays guided by instant diagnostic feedback. The English teacher will then be able to focus more heavily on guiding individual students through broader topic navigation. Currently, our school has one designated computer lab that is shared among eight grade levels of students. Time in the computer lab is limited, thus drastically reducing opportunities for meaningful project-based learning. The integration of Google Chromebooks will allow students to engage in long term writing projects integrated across subject areas. In the reading and analysis of Literature, students will be able to use the Chromebooks for on-going Reading Logs. Presently, students use sticky notes and other ways to note their responses while reading, but these methods are difficult for the students to organize and use meaningfully. Access to a Chromebook will allow students to complete notes on a graphic organizer that tracks neatly across an entire novel, thus allowing them to identify and group the repetition of ideas, the growth of characters, and other information that will build independent skills of analysis.

The expected impact on student achievement will be measured by the conventions of writing. The state standards aligned to the academic goals include:
● Write routinely over extended time frames (time for reflection and revision)
● Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively
● Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas clearly and efficiently.

Integrating Google Chromebooks and Criterion into the English classroom will give students the opportunity to practice writing at their own pace, get immediate feedback and revise essays based on the feedback. Improvement will be measured by the increase in published writing and diagnostic indicators on conventions of writing.

Integrating Google Chromebooks and Criterion into the English classroom will decrease the time it takes teachers to read and give feedback on writing conventions. Teachers will be able to concentrate on the content of students’ work and teach higher level writing skills. Teachers will benefit from collaboration tools, like Google Docs, to create lesson plans and joint projects. Streamlining technology makes it easy to create, share, and access information. Google Chromebooks will be used to stream webinars, invite guest speakers via video chat, and connect with students across the world with blogging and message boards.
