My overhead is a throwback to the '80's. While I'd love to pay homage to it, it doesn't do much to increase their engagement or and 8th graders love of learning. Really, my classroom is somewhat irrelevant. The classroom should not only prepare students for life, but should push their thinking, what they are capable of, and expose them to a world of possibilities. Technology can do that for all kids.

As a teacher for 12 years, I have been in and out of all sorts of schools. However, the context does not negate need or desire. Being new to New Orleans, I was surprised by the lack of technology in my classroom. Each year, I spent thousands (I have the receipts to prove it) on books for my kids. Many get lost or become treasures kids don't want to give up. With an iPad, I can buy and keep books for my students to read. I can use the iPad to showcase books, to do read-alouds, and to talk to kids about how to emulate when we see good writer's do. With an iPad, I can allow students opportunities to do and share their thinking right there for the whole class to see.

A wired classroom not only opens new worlds to kids. It would allow us to level the playing field so to speak. If my kids do not gain exposure to media, technology, the apps out there that their peers are using, how is what we are trying to do relevant? I want what we do as a class to be sustainable and relevant-pushing their thinking and their confidence in themselves. A classroom iPad would be an ideal way to start.
