GOAL: To installation three Brent Electric Potter’s Wheels ($3,000 total)
Clay has a wonderfully forgiving nature that allows for expression, structure and imitation of nature often found in cultural and historic assignments. Most importantly students learn best when given opportunities and guidance through and exploratory, hands-on process, such as pottery!
The ceramics program at BHS will reach additional disciplines including English (Greek mythology and Roman architecture), United States History (National icons and hero’s in clay), Social Science (mask making, ceremonial vessels, hieroglyphics) and Graphic Design (recreation of 3D modeling and make making).
Clay makes it easy for all learners to find immediate results and gratifying expressive in three-dimensional arts.
Beginning level students will be able to follow the lines of tradition and learn the art of throwing functional forms. While upper level students will be able to create lidded vessels, stacked forms and altered forms. Students enrolled in special education classes due to deficits in cognitive and behavior abilities are expected to develop projects that express their insights and understanding of curricular activities by producing clay representations and models of classroom concepts. For many the wheel will be just another tool to assist in making a symmetrical form.

Why I Teach: Jimmy Carter once wrote, “We are of course a nation of differences. Those differences don’t make us weak. They’re the source of our strength.” I believe that every child has his or her own story to tell. As a result, each will share something that is unique and special, bringing diversity to our classrooms. It is my desire to help young people discover who they are, so they can begin to embrace their potential.
