Our students need two iPads to participate in events to help them learn about identifying a real community problem, and helping to solve it through teacher guided exploration of health, nutrition, and physical fitness. Student leaders will help track student data through things such as Fitnessgrams, BMI, pulse rate, level of student activities, and intensive journal writing. Students will all track this data and it will be input into traveling iPads to record the data. At the same time, student leaders will promote healthier life style choices, healthy eating, and nutrition education school wide to help our entire campus become more physically fit. We will participate in the Healthy Zone activities with community partners such as The United Way, The Cooper Institute, Fuel Up to Play 60, and Destination Imagination. These challenges require the team to identify and address a real-world need in a real-world setting. It offers participants many wonderful opportunities to serve our entire community. Our projects expect that children will have adult supervision as they work on their projects in the community. Age-appropriate supervision will be present in all areas so that the young participants have a safe and productive experience as they work in the community at large. The curriculum is designed to teach students all the creative process from imagination to application.
The intent of this project is for the team to design and carry out a challenge that addresses a real need in a community. For this project, we have selected healthy bodies because we know healthy bodies creates healthy minds.
Student leaders will document all year long, and create a real movie that will be entered into the nationwide contest for Destination Imagination that will be entertaining and informative. It will include a team created movie that documents the team’s project. Additionally, the presentation will include a Project Review that effectively evaluates the team’s Project. A live Press Conference will also be effectively integrated into the Presentation.
The Presentation will include team-created and pre-recorded photographs and recordings of team members, non-team members, staff, and community members that are all treated with care and respect.
STEM Challenge attributes include teaching students to:
• Use technology to produce photographs and recordings
• Use technology to produce a movie that outlines the team’s service learning project
• Use technology to perform research
Students will also participate in Service Learning, Partnerships, Documentation, Movie Production,
Team work, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Community Collaboration as we lead our entire community to become healthier.
