The Luisa Dessus Cruz Middle School (MS 302) is located in the Southern part of the Bronx. MS 302 serves students in grades 6-8 with a total population of approximately 600 students. A percentage of our student population lives in temporary housing or a shelter in our community. MS 302 is a central part of the community to many of the students and their families. MS 302's student population is continuously changing, a fact that creates unique challenges for the administration and faculty. Our need for the new tablets is centered on the premise of creating a culture of learning at MS 302 that promotes and exposes students to activities that are rigorous, yet empowering. Our intent is to produce a learning community of students who own their own learning by fostering awareness, inquiry and exploration through authentic real world applications, and the utilization and integration of technology. Students will be emboldened by their participation in the creation and development of tutorial subject specific content and the authoring and publishing of their own digital books. By engaging students in research-based instructional strategies, formative assessments and collaborative projects students will demonstrate academic rigor, inquiry and mastery of core concepts. Students will be introduced to and instructed on how to use industry standard authoring applications and technology tools. Students will make use of graphics, animation, text, sound and video to produce and publish content, as they become 21st century authors. Students will be engaged and encouraged as they access content developed for them by their fellow classmates. Students will create a digital library. Teachers will also learn how to utilize these tools and develop content along with students for access. Content will be cataloged, posted and accessible via the school?s online learning repository. The school will create an iTunes U presence so students can access their content, at school or at home. Due to fiscal and budget constraints, the school is doing more with less, requiring us to look for additional funding resources for technology acquisitions. To that end, the school has acquired a variety of technology hardware over the years (iMacs, Smartboards etc.) to support instructional goals and increase achievement and performance outcomes. The school has also participated in STEM activities involving Science, and Robotics, competing in the First Lego League competitions, winning 1st, and 2nd place citywide. The acquisition of tablets would help us further our ongoing commitment to preparing our students for a successful transition to high school, college and a 21st century global economy. The tablets will help MS302 provide an additional platform for engaging students in critical thinking skills, allowing them to actively participate in the learning process by constructing authentic learning and working in a collaborative setting to be the owners of their learning.
