Literacy Through Photography Project

Created by Denise Ribeiro
What is it?
ľ It is a project that encourages children to explore their world as they photograph scenes from their own lives, and then to use their images as catalysts for verbal and written expression. Social Studies and Literacy Georgia Performance Standards are integrated in to all parts of this project.

What will the students do?
ľ In Class
o Students will brainstorm things that are in their home communities through the use of video, literature, and discussion.
o Students will use what they¡¦ve learned about school communities and compare and contrast their school and home communities through the use of a Venn diagram.
o Students will learn the basics functions of a camera and how to take pictures that include certain characteristics in well-detailed photographs.
o Students will develop an appreciation for everyone¡¦s individual, and diverse communities.

ľ Outside of Class
o Students will be given a camera one day next week to take home for the night. Each student can take up to 5 pictures. PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO TAKE MORE THAN FIVE PICTURES. If this happens, please send in another disposable camera so that the other children will be able to take their own pictures. ALL CAMERAS SHOULD BE RETURNED THE NEXT DAY.

o By the end of our project, every child will have created their own slide with pictures from their home and school community and a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two communities.

Here is a draft rubric of how I will grade the projects:

E= a Venn diagram with 2 differences and 1 similarity and two pictures from each
community, and correct spelling and punctuation.
G= a Venn diagram with 1 difference and 1 similarity and very few pictures from their
communities, and very few spelling and punctuation errors.
S= Incomplete Venn diagram, 1 difference or similarity, one picture and some spelling and punctuation errors.
N= Incomplete Venn diagram, No differences or similarities, one picture, some spelling and punctuation errors.
U= No Venn diagram, no differences or similarities, no pictures, and many spelling and punctuation errors.
