Original Author: Madalynn Laqua, San Angelo
I have two classes and each class is split up in to 6 groups. Each groups was given a choice of who they wanted to research. Harriet Tubman, Rosa Park, Carter G. Woodson, George Washington Carver and Jackie Robinson were Chosen.
They worked in stations...
Research station-The students were given a list of guiding question to help them know what to look for. They were also give specific resources from our library web site to start off the research process. They were able to branch out from there but at least they has some where to start.
The research part was done in a station
Character Analysis station- We read two stories, "Sweet Clara and the freedom Quilt" and "Henry and the Freedom Box." They had to analyze the steps each character too to achieve their goal and the character traits they exhibited that helped them be successful in achieve their goal. Then they create a Venn diagram on the Smart board to compare the two characters.
Vocabulary- the words came from the two books listed above. They has to create a foldable of their choice to display the definition, example, sentence and illustration for the word. (Frayer Model)
Word list: slave, independent, plantation. conductor, master, mistress, obey, contrary, clumsy, quarters, seamstress and quilt.
Writing station- they write a bio poem the first week and a research report the second week.
Independent project station- They had to create one of three projects, a poster, a flip book or a bio cube. The bio cube was create on the web site ReadWriteThink.
The students presented the google slides presentation and the class took the quiz to keep them accountable for paying attention during the presentations.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
I would like to have at least one chrome book for each group, or enough for every student in the group to have one. We borrowed a cart from the library to do this activity but I would really like to use them on an daily basis.
Follow-Up
After the students finished writing the research paper they went through the revise and edit process and peer conferenced to create a polished piece. They we held authors chair for the students to share the writing they did.
