Bishop Elementary School
Hometown:
Jacksonville, Texas
Class Information:
Room Number: 36
Students per Class: currently 102
Class Description:
My class is a pullout program for gifted and talented students in grades one through four. Students attend one day per week to work on enrichment and extensions to the regular classroom. This classroom was established five years ago and we currently have four classroom computers. We also have time in the computer lab weekly; however, students are interested in building webpages, creating multi-media presentations, presentations to the community, and clay animation. We need equipment in the classroom to allow them time to work on these projects for more than an hour per day.
Position:
Gifted and Talented Instructor
Needs:
Computers, digital cameras (still and video), interactive white board, LCD projector, most anything technology related.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I'm a single parent of a gifted child and am a strong advocate for gifted children in today's schools. I have been teaching for 20years, 14 of which have been spent working with gifted children in grades one through six.
College and Degrees:
I currently hold a Bachelors of Science in Education.
Activities:
Like most teachers, I have very little down time for activities. I do enjoy reading and computers, which are things that can be done a little at a time and when I can fit them in.
Favorite Books:
I love reading, and my mother once said if there were words on it, I'd read it. My favorite books I own - Tales From Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb; to Kill a Mockingbird; Harry Potter series; Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series; Courage to Teach; and William Glasser's Quality Schools.
Favorite Quotes:
I have many, this the current one I have in my signatures: The most extraordinary thing about a really good teacher is that he or she transcends accepted educational methods. Such methods are designed to help average teachers approximate the performance of good teachers. Margaret Mead
Interests:
music, art, books, computers, literature, food, wine, most anything.. I like to think of myself as a lifelong learner and therefore, most everything interests me in some way or other.
Employment History:
I've been in my current position for 20 years. I have taught everything from first to sixth grade.
Why Do I Teach?:
Because I think it's important. The ability to learn is the greatest gift we have. I think it's important that the next generation not only is educated in the basics - but they are also taught the importance of thinking, reasoning and learning on their own - and to NOT depend on the opinions and advice of others. They must learn to read, research, judge, evaluate and decide for themselves what is the best course of action. To do this, someone must help them see that these things are important. I want to be that person.
