Class Information:
Room Number: English and Ger
Students per Class: 100
Position:
English and German Teacher
Needs:
Poetry, Please: 21st Century Literacy, Collaboration, and the Community Project Currently,BLHS requires four years of English for its graduates. The English Department serves 100% of the student population; however, we receive little funding compared to other departments for classroom projects. Most of our budget covers teacher materials, paper, and testing. Despite our serving the entire student body, our funding has not adequately increased. Project materials are scarce and expensive; for most of the projects in my German and English classes I have had to foot the bill. My classroom budget for teacher supplies of $50 a year barely covers the materials for yearly supplies of crayons, markers, glue, and note cards for other in-class collaborative work and review.
My Philosophy:
Rationale for the Program/Activity Adigitally driven age requires its educators to rethink their approach to teaching. As an English teacher, reading and writing remain paramount in acquiring and assessing knowledge, but there are other means by which to assess literacy. Through digital literacy, students are engaged in the learning process and are able to better share and distribute their knowledge to others. If through teaching you learn more, than this project will enable high school students to “teach” middle school students the basics of poetry terminology and analysis while learning more in return. We will analyze poetic works from historical and biographical perspectives, assess poetic terminology as it applies to the works, create scripts and storyboards for our poetry films, develop digital productions of our poetry “plays”, and distribute our films to middle school teachers for use in their classrooms. Student Learning Objectives The National Council of Teachers of English has broadened its definition of literacy to include “21st Century Literacy.” Not only do students need to read and write, but they now are required to “read” and “write” with regards to technology and media. The NCTE states that literacies “are multiple, dynamic, and malleable. As in the past, they are inextricably linked with particular histories, life possibilities, and social trajectories of individuals and groups” (NCTE website). This project will address objectives as defined by the NCTE and the student performance indicators stated by the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education). The students will be able to… • appreciatereading and interpreting poetry across cultures • researchand critically analyze poetry from a historical and biographical perspective • designpresentations through storyboarding and scriptwriting prior to the recording and editing process • developproficiency with technology tools required for this project • exhibita positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity (ISTE) • work with other students as they analyze poetry collaboratively • share their knowledge and expertise of poetry with middle school students through their projects
