East Union Attendance Center
Class Information:
Room Number: 65
Students per Class: 20 Total
Class Description:
I teach Life Skills Math and English for the 9th through 12 th grades at East Union Attendance Center in Union County, Mississippi. I have each grade for two periods a day. I do not have any seniors this year, but can't wait till next year when I will have two! The 2010 school year will be even better on graduates.
Position:
Occupational- SPED
Needs:
Our classroom is in dire need of resources. The children have used the same text books every year, so I try to pull new ones from the internet, as well as allow them time to research new occupational topics. We only have an old camera that uses floppy disks, a vcr player with no cords, and only two computers that will only run a few cd games. Anything that our class is awarded can and will be used frequently to better the students understanding of the world that they are about to enter.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a second year teacher with large ambitions for myself and my students. I have to make my lessons interested because most of my students don't think that they can do well academically, or just don't want to be there. I want them to have a desire to learn and in order to instill this quality in them, I need help through interesting and exciting materials.
College and Degrees:
I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi. I have endorsements in English and Social Studies due to having 21 hours in each subject. I acquired the Sped endorsement by taking the Praxis II. I am currently working on my Master's in Special Education and hope to get another endorsement in Emotional Disoders.
Activities:
I am a volunteer fire-fighter and secretary for the Sherman fire department and I am closely connected with two other local departments. I am also an emergency responder. I am very involved with my local church, and have a wonderful daughter who wants to go there everyday! I also enjoy doing things with/for my neices and nephews. I love hunting, fishing, and mud riding in the Rhino with my family.
Favorite Books:
My favorite book is going to be whatever I happen to be reading at the time. I absolutely love reading and will devour a novel in a few nights. I also enjoy studying the bible and attending bible study because it is such a deep and confusing book, I feel like you should take your time in trying to gain an understanding of its meanings.
Favorite Quotes:
This section also is one that I can not narrow in on. I write a quote on my board every morning for my kids to read on their own. Almost daily, a student will ask me, "What does that mean?" This is my opportunity to explain the positive words and hopefully impact the way that they think about the world around them! People don't care what you know until they know that you care. Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment. Oprah Winfrey If you can dream it, you can do it! Walt Disney
Interests:
I am interested in helping others. I feel like God has given me so many blessings in my life that I owe it to him to continue this pattern. I cannot say no when someone asks for a donation, and will often to without to give to others. I love that I have the knowledge and abilities to save someone's life both physically and possibly spiritually.
Employment History:
I have been employed at East Union since August of 2007. I love my position and hope that it remains available to me next year. I worked at Millcreek of Pontotoc during the 2006-2007 schoolyear and summer. Millcreek is a psychiatric facility for children with emotional disorders. This job really touched my heart, and I plan to continue teaching there during the summers for as long as they will have me.
Why Do I Teach?:
When I began in the Education program, it was mainly because I wanted to be like my dad and I thought that teaching was the right thing to do. Once I got into the program and started student teaching blocks, I fell in love with the children. Nothing in this world can make you feel better than seeing a childs face light up because they understand what you are trying to teach them. This especially goes for special education children who have struggled for so long. All I want is to be able to touch each one of my students in a postive manner whether or not it is academic. I want them to understand that they hold the key to their future.
