Keywords: Occupational, Work
Subject(s): Social Skills, Photography, Special Needs, Information Skills
Grades 9 through 12
School: East Union Attendance Center, Blue Springs, MS
Planned By: Susan Culpepper
Original Author: Susan Culpepper, Blue Springs
Following any chosen occupational lesson, the students will be asked to choose a topic for a project. After the students have chosen a topic, they will be asked to make a list of some possible pictures that they could take to satisfy their topics. After they have 10-15 choices listed, they will be given a new digital camera to use in capturing their chosen images and any that may just happen while they are out and about.

*Prior lessons must be given on the use and carrying of the equipment.

Individually, or in small groups the students will begin taking pictures of various workers (while they are working, not posing!). The students will then chose the images that they want to keep and delete the rest.

*Pictures may be sold to the subjects in them for a small fee to help cover the cost of ink, or developing.

After they have printed or developed their pictures, the individual or group will sit down and begin to assemble their collage. Upon completion, the collage must be presented to the class. The student/s will point of specific pictures and tell how they feel that the pictures represent the topic that they chose.

This lesson plan is expected to last two weeks. It is a different type of assignment than the children are used to and should provide them with a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

Possible Evaluations:
Rubric for the presentation
Checklists for the ongoing process
Peer critiques
Self- reflection/ critique

Comments
This plan may open a whole new create outlet for my otherwise stressful students. Most don't want to try anything because they say they can't do it, but with photography, anyone can snap a picture. Everyone's perception of that picture will be different and it will open new thoughts for all involved.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project will incorporate Life Skills English objectives for communication and social skills with Life Skills Math career preparation objectives for job understanding, and work ethics just to name a few.
Follow-Up
Other art based activities could be used to express the same topic or a new one. Acting out games such as shirades, or chosing music to play while portraying work would be a great way to welcome creativity and fun in learning.
