White Oak Elementary School
Class Information:
Room Number: E104
Students per Class: 15
Class Description:
I teach K – 5 exceptional students from two schools, White Oak Elementary K-2 and D. F Walker Elementary 3- 5. The majority of my students are Autistic and some are multiply handicapped. Most of my students do not talk and must use pictures to communicate. I teach my students to communicate, read, write and do math. I also help the regular teachers integrate my students into their science and social studies lessons. Some of my students are in the regular class and I visit them there. Some are in my classroom anywhere from one hour to all day. The one thing all of my students have in common is the need for pictures to help them communicate and learn. Even my gifted autistic children who can talk and spend all day in the regular classroom need pictures to help them transition through the day or remind them of the correct behavior. I love teaching autistic children. In 28 years I have never had a boring day. They are always teaching me something new.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
My classroom could really use a digital camera. It would allow me to easily teach lessons in all areas and “grab the teachable moments” when they happen. It would also help me to integrate my students into there regular classrooms. In addition the regular teachers would benefit by making it possible for me to quickly meet there needs for pictures about their science and social studies units.

Why Do I Teach?:
Why teach? That is a question I have been asked often in the past 28 years. The simplest and best answer is I love it. I love children. I love the sparkle they get when they first learn to read. The joy is indescribable when you realize the child you are teaching can now communicate their wants and needs, or they can now sound out simple words and will soon be soaring through books.
