Azalea Park Elementary School
Hometown:
Orlando
Class Information:
Room Number: Portable 40
Students per Class: 22
Class Description:
We are one of eight fourth grade classrooms in a low-income, highly diverse populated school with 1,080 students. The students are excited about learning but do fall in the at-risk category in both math and reading. I have designed my classroom to allow for student independence. While full-class lessons are taught, I encourage inquiry-based learning in all subject areas.
Position:
classroom teacher/Partners In Education Liaison
Needs:
We 'live' in an older portable. We are limited in our technology materials due to spacing and accessibility. We would like to add hardware and software to implement a variety of learning methods to meet the variety of learning styles of the students. Specifically, we would be excited to have whiteboard and podcasting capabilities. Additionally, with limited space, rolling technology carts would help us organize our learning into available areas. A 'digital visual presenter' would be an incredible tool for our classroom. The ability to project the page of a book or a student produced image would give unlimited opportunities for teachable moments.
My Philosophy:
If the information is out there, find it and use it. Our students are limited in at-home computer access. Computers are essential to open the doors to research, independent study, and interactive learning. By creating a technology-based classroom, the world is not so daunting when the information is at their fingertips. With interactive learning, skills and strategies are shared among the learners.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching in Orange County, Florida for over 20 years. My first love is social studies where I can share the past as my students move towards the future.
College and Degrees:
I attended Brevard Community College, Saint Thomas University in Fredricton, New Brunswick, Canada, and the University of Central Florida. I have a degree in Sociology/Social Work and am certified 1-6 in Elementary Education.
Activities:
When I'm not searching the web for new ideas for my classroom, my husband and I are 'parrotheads,' and are actively involved in many community service projects.
Favorite Books:
I love picture books I can incorporate into my middle-grade classroom. My favorite titles would be based on my current curriculum.
Favorite Quotes:
"The limit of my world is the limit of my words." Susan Bozak
Interests:
Reading, spending time with our grandson, relaxing in tropical areas, listening to all kinds of music.
Employment History:
I've been in the classroom for twenty years, ranging from second grade to eighth grade. I have taught in public and private schools.
Why Do I Teach?:
There's a magic moment when a child realizes they have achieved success in a strategy or skill. I teach because I want to see those moments. I teach because I realize there are too many parents who don't know how to give their children the support they need to reach their potential. I teach because the information is out there, just waiting to be touched by little hands and minds.
