Class Description:
Racially and ethnically diverse mix of students from low-income families. Interior classroom with no windows. Two friends and I painted my walls with a beach mural this summer to make it more comfortable and energetic. We call our room Patrick's Paradise. Sadly, we have no storage whatsoever. Flat screen TV (46in) connected to one of two older computers (WinXP).

Needs:
More technology! Upgraded computers would be amazing. Headsets with microphones, so students could hear AND record their own voices. Smartboard would be a huge help to these kids who have little or no technology at home. Flip video camera would put tech right in their hands and give them a creative voice.
My Philosophy:
Students need to work as cooperative groups to build their learning (social constructivism). They need lots of hands on experiences with materials AND technology. We are developing 21st century citizens and to do this in the best way possible we need our students to to have access to those materials and technology.

About Me:
55 years young. 3rd year teacher. Formerly a teacher assistant who went back to school to get my teaching degree (should have done it years ago). Married mom of two grown children (31 and 29) and a 16 year old high school senior. Geek. Reader of MANY books, especially children's and young adult literature.
College and Degrees:
Appalachian State University - Bachelors of Science - Elementary Education - 2007 Currently in grad school at the same university - my program is Instructional Technology, but I want to stay in my primary classroom after graduation. Our students need teachers who love and embrace technology.
Activities:
Several school committees. Member of NCAE (North Carolina Association of Educators) and NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Math).

Harry Potter series. Anything by Shannon Hale, Tamora Pierce, L.M. Meyer, Stephenie Meyer, Diana Gabaldon. MANY education books.
