The Sustainability Academy at Lawrence Barnes
Class Information:
Room Number: Library
Students per Class: 200
Class Description:
I teach literature-focusedlibrary classes and collaborative technology classes with classroom teachers. The library and lab are very much engrained in the school's mission for education for sustainability. We are very proud of our school's diverse student body, which is made up of over 10 languages spoken, includes many differing abilities, and students from many different cultures, races, and ethnicities. I believe that having a school library and lab that offer ALL students motivating and up-to-date books and technology equipment helps us in addressing equity and social justice issues.
Position:
Library/Media Specialist
Needs:
Our students live in an urban environment. As a school, we believe in learning through exploration of our natural environment, place-based learning, and service learning. As students go out into our backyard and community, we want our technology projects to travel with them. Because we don't want to just integrate technology into our indoor computer lab time, we are in desperate need of portable technology, especially: CanonPowershot digital cameras with rechargeable batteries (class set if possible!) A class iPad lab with a cart and 23 iPads with Otterbox cases These would all be for STUDENT use, and for ALL students in our school. Big ticket items, I know! Anything toward this goal would be such a wonderful contribution. We can't afford these items on our very limited budget, and love to dream big about all the ways we could create projects that share our visions of a sustainable future. Why Do I Teach?:
I can't imagine a more fulfilling job than doing what I do. I am constantly amazed at how brilliant our students are and how incredibly dedicated our teachers are. As the school librarian, I get the chance to see everyone in the school and watch children grow older and move from grade to grade. Connecting kids to books, helping with technology projects that enhance our studies of sustainability and getting to know our very diverse student body are great reasons to get up and come to work every morning.
