I teach both computer applications ( word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and desktop publishing) and programming. I also try to go beyond this to include Web design, podcasting, video work, Web 2.0, and anything else that I think the students are interested in or that might be of use to them academically or in future employment.
Position:
Computer Science
Needs:
School funds are especially limited right now, so my budget is basically frozen. I can use new keyboards, software, Fip cameras, lap tops, etc. I am trying to teach 21st Century skills but still am "stuck" with some 20th Century technology.
My Philosophy:
I believe that every child can learn. Over the years, I have had blind students, deaf students, autistic students, but one thing they all had in common was that when I gave them a computer and some basic instructions, they were able to find their way.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been down many paths. I started in pre-med. Then I found myself as a vocal music major. I have had a semi-professionalcareer as a model/singer/actor.Now, in my "twilight" years, I am still pursuing my teaching passion by teaching young people and adults about computers. I love to read (I have an Amazon Kindle that goes everywhere I go) and I enjoy learning (strange as that might seem).
College and Degrees:
Bachelors of Music Education from Florida State University; Masters of Arts in Teaching - Computer Education from Jacksonville University; I also have a Doctor of Divinity degree
Activities:
Reading, Web surfing, walking
Favorite Books:
Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and a wide variety of non-fiction. Right now I am reading Globa Shift, by Edmond J. Bourne
Favorite Quotes:
"We are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist...using technologies that haven't been invented...in order to solve problems we don't even know are problems yet." - Richard Riley, Secretary of Education under Clinton
Interests:
Technology trends, education trends, how the brain works, global beliefs
Employment History:
Tour train driver; performer; taught music K-12; taught computers middle school and college
Why Do I Teach?:
I love teaching young people. I started as a music teacher, but I have also had a long time interest in computers. When I got my masters in computer education, I began working with middle school students and computers. It is always an education for me, because I have to keep learning just to keep up with them and the ever changing world of technology.
