Class Description:
I teach 8th grade language arts in a classroom that fosters learning communities and student partnerships. We work collaboratively on relevant, real-world content that provides a practical context for discovery and application of new knowledge.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
140 Digital Storage Devices (1GB) - We share a computer cart with 9 other classes, so we need a way to save our work for extended projects and digital portfolios. FlipCamera - There are a number of uses for digital videography in our language arts lessons. Digital Camera - There are a number of uses for digital photography in our language arts lessons.
My Philosophy:
I believe that every student has the right to meaningful, engaging instruction that will better prepare them for life beyond the classroom. Students who are taught to be critical thinkers and problem solvers are far more likely to be able to transfer content knowledge and apply it in relevant ways.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a very happily married mother of two children. Both of my children graduated from high school in 2010 and are continuing their educations at institutions of higher learning. My husband and I are a little apprehensive about the "empty nester" status that we have achieved and are thankful to have our other "children" - our Chinese Pugs, Porter and Katie - still at home. I coach middle school cheerleading and am very active in my district helping to improve educational opportunities for all of the students that we serve. I love gardening and all things outdoors - especially those involving the beautiful Arizona sunshine and water recreation.
College and Degrees:
I returned to college to achieve a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the age of 29. I haven't stopped going to school ever since. I earned my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2005 and a Reading Specialist Certificate in 2010.
Activities:
Cheerleading, water sports, camping, reading, dancing, writing
Favorite Books:
There are simply too many to list!! My favorite is usually the one I am reading at the time. I love everything from the classics to contemporary, science fiction to historical biography, romance to drama!
Favorite Quotes:
Shoot for the moon, if you miss you'll still land among the stars! ~ Anonymous
Interests:
I am truly a life-long learner and seek out every opportunity to improve my practice. I have recently committed to becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. I imagine that this particular endeavor will keep me very busy over the next year!
Employment History:
I have worked in the same district for all but one of my 9 years teaching. The district has a high ESL population and a high percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients. I believe that this is where my impact will be felt the greatest. I taught 1st grade my first year of teaching and then moved to the middle grades. I've taught 5th-8th grades for the last 8 years.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I truly believe that education is the catalyst for social equality and the overall strength of our nation. I am dedicated to helping my students realize their potential and providing opportunities to promote their success as positive members of society and as the leaders of tomorrow.
