Class Description:
I teach an intervention class for struggling readers. Most have been identified with characteristics of dyslexia; some are English language learners. Others lack the familial support or financial resources that many students who excel in reading at an early age enjoy.

Needs:
I am asking for a chromebook cart and headphones with microphones. Assitive technology has been identified as one of the best methods of support for dyslexic adolescents, and ELL students would benefit as well. I would like to utilize apps such as Google Classroom, Read and Write for Google Chrome, and Google Fluency Tutor. Most of the features are available for free, but we need devices to take advantage of them.
My Philosophy:
My goal is to bridge the gap between elementary and high school by helping my students to become more independent and strategic readers so they can experience success across the curriculum in high school and beyond.

Why Do I Teach?:
I believe education, specifically literacy, is the best way to make the world a better place. It provides a pathway for children to escape poverty by opening doors to college and career. It "arms us against oppression" (Kelly Gallagher). It opens our minds to the wider world and develops in us an appreciation for diversity.
