Kingston Jr Sr High School
Class Information:
Room Number: 178
Class Description:
I teach Art and Math in the old shop room. I love the huge space, but there is a huge lack of technology. I just recently got a white board to write on for math and I am constantly cleaning and moving heavy equipment to make the room more suitable for all of my classes. This is the room where I teach 2D Art, 3D Art, Mixed Media Art/Digital Arts and Junior High Art. I also teach Senior Math, Advanced Algebra and Pre-Calculus in this room. After school I run the National Honor Society, Art Club and the Photography Cub all from this same old room. I have 4 OLD windows XP computers and only one with Photoshop and Dreamweaver on it. In fact, the website (linked above) was created and is maintained by students in my photography club under my instruction on this one machine. Our school's computer lab computers are even slower and couldn't even run Photoshop if they could afford to install it.
Position:
Art / Math Teacher
Personal Information:
College and Degrees:
I attended Michigan Technological University for one year in the Electrical Engineering Program before deciding I wanted to pursue my dream of being an Art Teacher. I then transferred to Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan and earned my bachelors in Education. I am an Art major (k-12) with a Math minor (7-12).
Employment History:
During my college years I worked at Best Buy for about 5 years. I started working in the warehouse , moved to computer sales and finally got on the Geek Squad. After graduating college I worked for Spectrum Robotics and programmed welding robots for automotive companies. I found this job to be very unfulfilling and quit after about a year to become a professional photographer. As a photographer I learned portrait, commercial and wedding photography. I enjoyed photography but I had been looking for a teaching job ever since I graduated. After two years of being a photographer and three years of searching for a teaching position, I finally found a school and I love it. I have now been teaching for two years.
Why Do I Teach?:
I can honestly say that I teach for the future, not just the future of my individual students, but for the future of of our country. I absolutely love my job! I teach Art k-12 and high school math at a title 1 (poor) school. Most of my students do not even have a computer at home, let alone the internet. I have many bright students but I don't have the technological means to help them succeed in today's digital society. I teach to be able to help kids succeed and make our future bright.
