Add Me as a Friend!
Gilham Elementary School
Class Information:
Room Number: B113
Students per Class: 28
Class Description:
I teach 28 - 32 third graders in a great public school. There are 3 third grade classrooms at Gilham. Our kids are fortunate to have Music and PE a few times a week as well as Library and Technology each week. We are writers, readers, scientists, & mathematicians as well as friends and collaborators. We have several class teddy bears who work with us.
Position:
3rd. gr. Teacher
Needs:
I'm really working towards being ready to use a Smart Board in my classroom. I'm getting trained, I have all the other necessary pieces of equipment - except for the Smart Board itself. I generally have purchased my own technology for my classroom, but with the economy as it is, I could use some help.
My Philosophy:
We do what's best for kids. I endeavor to help them develop the necessary Lifeskills to be whole human beings capable of solving a variety of problems with integrity, & knowing enough about life to express awe and appreciation in creative ways to real audiences. I want them to reflect on the small moments of their lives and be able to teach others.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I love gardening, photography, technology, knitting, yoga, being in nature, writing, supporting local artists and craftspersons whenever possible, eatting good organic food, being with family, traveling, breathing and spending time reflecting and being grateful for my life.
College and Degrees:
University of Oregon BS & Masters degrees
Favorite Books:
Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus; Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach; Crucial Conversations by K. Patterson et al; Mosaic of Thought by E.Keene & S. Zimmerman; Awakening the Heart/Exploring Poetry in Elem & Middle by Georgia Heard
Favorite Quotes:
• Audre Lorde quote: " When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." • Uncle Robbie Collins from his book,"A Disorderly Excursion" “We are all on a delicious disorderly excursion that deserves our full energy. That the trip is fated is all the more reason for wonder and enthusiasm.” Prem Rawat: "Some people say, 'In this big universe, you're just a speck of dust.' You may be a speck of dust. But oh, what a speck of dust! In this speck of dust, the infinite and the finite are fused. And you are the threshold of the two. Here, the mortal being comes as close as it possibly can to the immortal. The same power that drives the universe breathes us. We have been chosen to be the platform for life."
Employment History:
I've been teaching since 1987. I started out in middle school for 3 years & then moved to elementary. I've spent most of my time in third grade.
Why Do I Teach?:
I want kids to discover how incredible this planet is, and I want to nurture an insatiable curiosity about their own life and their place on this planet. I want to help them learn to articulate their experience and understandings in creative authentic ways. I want to be there when that spark ignites and they know it... when their fledgling feathers finally become strong enough to support them in flight. I want to be there for those moments...
