Hollis Upper Elementary School

Hollis, NH
Class Information:
Room Number: Fifth Grade Lea
Students per Class: 24
Class Description:
As a Learning Disabilities Specialist and Case Manager, I work with student both in and out of the classroom. My students read and write below grade level, as well as having math skills that are below grade level. They are wonderful kids who work so hard and we want to help them grow into independent learners. Often, the children can do the grade level work in specific subject areas, but their reading skills impede their success. We provide multisensory direct instruction in reading to below grade level readers with the idea that all will soon be on grade level. In the meantime, these children need support in the classroom. Some of the kids are embarrassed by the support and will claim to not need reading assistance when taking subject area tests (math, science, social studies).
Position:
Case Manager/LD Specialist
Needs:
I would like iPod nanos so that teachers can record subject area tests so that kids can sit at their desks (like their peers) and take their tests independently. Currently, kids are pulled aside or come to the Learning Lab where someone reads the test to them, as needed. Some children find this to be socially stigmatizing.
My Philosophy:
All kids deserve the chance to be independent learners. As teachers, we need to provide them with the skills to succeed.

Why Do I Teach?:
I love working with kids and helping them to reach their potential. I work with kids who struggle in a variety of ways. Some have trouble with reading, writing, or math. Other children might be challenged in the area of social skills. As a case manager for 24 fifth grade students in an inclusion school, I have the pleasure of working with kids with varied learning challenges. I love it!
