I work with deaf students who participate in mainstreamed classes 100% of the time. This means deaf students participate in class with hearing peers rather than in a deaf unit without hearing classmates.
Position:
Sign Language Interpreter
Needs:
Tablet PC with wifi capabilities or iPad
Tabletop book stand
Paper stand
My Philosophy:
I am not a teacher I'm an educational sign language interpreter. Regardless, I am considered an important part of the academic team when teaching deaf students. The use of technology helps increase deaf students comprehension and connection from a sign to an English word, and pictures are shown to help supplement visual understanding. While technology is more challenging to incorporate into interpreting lessons, it makes the learning experience more active and meaningful.
