I serve special education students with a range of behavioral issues, from emotional impairment to autism. They come from a variety of backgrounds, but most of the students on my caseload are low income and often single parent households.
Position:
special education school social worker
Needs:
My students would benefit from technology to facilitate their social progress. Since many students prefer electronic media, I would like to use an ipad and apps geared toward learning feelings, anger management, and social skills. There are also interactive stories available on the ipad that can facilitate learning and discussion.
My Philosophy:
I am a strong child advocate and want to make sure each child achieves to their potential and feels welcome and cared for in the school environment.
Personal Information:
College and Degrees:
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Michigan State University
Masterof Social Work from University of Michigan
Activities:
gardening, hiking, travelling, spending time with my kids
Why Do I Teach?:
Kids need as much support as possible to become emotionally healthy members of society. Having worked in foster care and mental health previously, I witnessed the consequences of trauma, stress, and mental illness. In the schools, I feel like I can make a bigger impact at an earlier stage. Children are very impressionable and often eager to improve their situation. I really enjoy all of the students and their individual personalities and strengths.
