I am the general education teacher in a Consultant model classroom, where special education students work together with great role models to create a nurturing learning environment. It is not uncommon for many different activities to be taking place in my classroom at one time; all students are different, and benefit from different things. Every student in my class knows I will respect them, and in turn I get their respect. But they also know that whatever the topic we are covering, I will do everything I can to make it fun and memorable.
Position:
General Ed Teacher
Needs:
Our classroom (and our school) needs greater access to technology, including student computers, televisions and visual media. Much of the equipment in our school building is aging (some beyond 20 years), and as money gets tighter, it is more difficult for us to replace this obsolete equipment.
My Philosophy:
My philosophy of education is based in the fundamentals of differentiated instruction: students will get greater results and give greater effort when they are intrinsically motivated by their work. To do this, I allow students choice in the work they pursue, designing learning experiences for specific students based on their readiness, interest, and their learning style. To me, equal work is not fair to every student in the classroom; students need to be able to work at their own pace in every subject. The students and I work together to capitalize on our strengths, and improve in our areas of weakness.
