Warren New Tech High
Hometown:
Littleton
Class Information:
Room Number: 9
Students per Class: 115
Class Description:
I teach English and theatre arts to active ninth graders. Our school has nearly a 1:1 ratio of students to computers (Thin Client connected to a server), though our software is limited. Students participate in Project-based Learning, working in groups, with contracts and rubrics, to develop 21st Century skills. We make music videos, have outdoor drama fests, create literature-based computer games, write and rap original poetry, film documentaries and create podcasts of oral history.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Digital and video cameras are the greatest priority (along with batteries), but additional computers would assure that each student could access work on the internet daily.
My Philosophy:
I want to keep students engaged and excited, and it all starts with building relationships. I want to empower students to build all of their skills (written/oral communication), work ethic, collaboration, critical thinking in addition to the required content. Learning is about much more than a state test!
Personal Information:
About Me:
I've taught for 34 years and I learn something new everyday. In the past three years, I've been at a school that stresses 21st Century Learning Outcomes, and I finally feel I've found my world. I'm more excited to go to school now than when I was a starry-eyed youngster.
College and Degrees:
University of North Carolina, with a bachelor's degree in music education. Also certified to teach academically gifted students and high school English.
Activities:
32 years of experience in community theatre, as director, costumer, set designer, actress, and pretty much anything else. 15 years as an arts columnist for the local newspaper. Extensive travels.
Favorite Books:
To Kill a Mockingbird, Their Eyes Were Watching God, All Quiet on the Western Front, Pride and Prejudice, Three Cups of Tea.
Favorite Quotes:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." (Margaret Mead)
Interests:
Writing and the beauty of words; travel and the beauty of the world; philanthropy and the beauty of the human spirit.
Employment History:
34 years of teaching, all in rural, low-wealth counties in North Carolina.
Why Do I Teach?:
I want to see young people have the chances that I've been given. Friends say I am too wrapped up in my students, but there's a magic in the classroom when I see that lightbulb go off, when a kid who has resisted or struggled finally "gets it". I teach for kids like "Ben" - a shy, at-risk kid whom I had to coax into performing a monologue. He did it and BECAME Eubie Blake. A year later, he came by my room: "Do you remember when you taught me how to speak in front of a group?" What can top a comment like that?
