I work in a classroom of students who have significant disabilites. Many of my students are still completing work at the kindergarten - second grade level. A few of my students are even lower than that. We focus on life skills a lot in the class, but try to get them into the general education classes as much as possible.
Position:
SSN Teacher
Needs:
We really need more technology to help these kids succeed. We want them to spend time in classes with their peers, but it is difficult to do that when the materials are so far above their level. Having the iPads would let them complete work in the classes without worrying about if they can keep up with their peers, because they are doing work that is meaningful to them.
My Philosophy:
I believe that all kids can learn if we give them the right tools. We, as teachers, need to support them. In this day and age, technology is a key part of how they will interact with the world around them as adults, and it is important to teach them to use this technology early on.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I didn't want to be a teacher until I began working with kids with disabilities at my high school. That was my "ah ha!" moment. Ever since then, I have made it my goal to be the best Special Education Teacher I can be.
College and Degrees:
I attended Metropolitan State University of Denver and obtained a B.A. in Education with a dual license in Special Education and Elementary Education.
Activities:
During my free time I mostly read books and work out occasionally. When I have the opportunity, I have volunteered at Project Homeless Connect in the past, where I helped individuals experiencing homelessness to connect to resources in the community to assist them. I have also volunteered at various youth organizations around Denver.
Favorite Books:
My favorite books are the Harry Potter series, as well as other young adult series'. I also enjoy reading books about how to perfect my craft (as a teacher) such as The New Teacher Book and The First Days of School.
Employment History:
I have worked at my current school since I graduated from MSU Denver in May 2014. I began there as a para-educator last school year, and was fortunate enough to be able to move into a teaching position this school year.
Why Do I Teach?:
I love working with the kids, pure and simple. The kids I work with are fantastic, and for the most part, don't know that there is anything different about them. Seeing them achieve new things makes me happy, and I look forward to watching them achieve even more in the future!
