Constantine Elementary School
Class Information:
Students per Class: around 25
Class Description:
I teach fifth grade math and science. We are actually self-contained, but my partner and I decided to allow the students to change for reading and math. I am better at math and science and she is beter at reading and writing. There is a variety of learning styles in our classroom. They range from autisim to gifted/enrichmentstudents. The students are very active and hands-on, and are kinesthetic learners. I have taught them previously in third grade (2 years ago) and am looking forward to teaching them again.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
Our school is located in a low socio-economic area. Most of my students receive free lunches (as I did in high school) and live in government housing receiving assistance. Because of their economic status, most of our students simply do not have the necessary means to conduct research or complete homework with the aide of a computer. Many of our parents go to the city library in order to check email and allow their child access to the internet. Also, our school system is lacking financial support from our state, so money is very tight. I created my wishlist to bring my classroom into the 21st century. I do not have the luxury of going to a store and purchsing these items. However, I know my students ARMT and SAT10 scores would improve dramatically with the aide of a smartboard because I could provide more oppotunities for them to see their learning in action.
My Philosophy:
I feel that the greatest challenge educators face today is capturing our students’ attention and keeping it. Our students learn in so many ways that it is hard sometimes to recognize the best way to teach them. I am planning to incorporate a lot of hands-on activities in all the subjects as well as allowing students more freedom in expressing their ideas and thoughts. Elementary students (especially 5th graders) are like social butterflies waiting to emerge from the cocoon. As teachers, we should encourage their desire for open communication by allowing them the freedom to discuss topics being presented. The easiest way to do this is by placing the students into cooperative groups. I begin the year by placing my students in cooperative groups. They do not always have to complete assignments together, but they have the opportunity if it is needed. I have found that my students perform better and comprehend more if I step aside to facilitate and allow them to discover the information on their own. I am selective in grouping my students; however, I do not allow one student to dominate the others. There is no growth if one person is dominating and the rest are simply following along. It truly takes a village to raise a child and I believe it takes one to educate a child as well. If teachers will discover a student’s ability and incorporate all the stakeholders (including parents), then the student will have success and we will accomplish our goals as educators.

Why Do I Teach?:
It seems as an educator, I am asked this question a lot. I do not teach for the money, the hours, vacation time, or because it is an easy profession. I do not see any part of my profession as easy. I teach because God has instilled a love for children in me to see them thrive and succeed. It is important to provide an example for our youth, and teaching allows me to do that. They also need an outlet to express themselves and feel safe in doing so. My favorite part of the day is when a struggling student grasps a skill and the lightbulb goes off!
