Class Description:
I teach English and Language Arts and Science to two classes in a rural community in Virginia. My classes encompass a wide variety of learners, from high achieving to at risk students with a diverse racial make up. More than fifty percent of my students are economically disadvantaged.

Needs:
My students need access to technology in order to gain confidence and become successful in today's world. They also need basic science equipment to support our curriculum for hands on instruction, bringing the content to life for them. Finally, reading is key to any student's education. Students must have a variety of reading choices on their reading level. Many choices ensures that there are topics of interest for every child, encouraging self selected reading.
My Philosophy:
I believe that positive relationships with my students are the basis for learning in the classroom. When my students realize that I will respect them, believe in them, support them, and have their best interests at the forefront, they give me their best. Setting high expectations and tracking progress with students ensures that those expectations will be met.

Why Do I Teach?:
Teaching makes me happy! Watching my kids grow throughout the year into confident learners, knowing that they can accomplish their goals is one of my greatest joys. I believe that instilling a strong sense of responsibility and self-respect into my students is as important as ensuring that they have the content area skills. Through cooperative learning, collaboration, and effective communication skills, students learn that they CAN achieve. When that happens, they begin to soar, and this follows them throughout life. What better way to spend your time?
