E M Yoder Elementary School
Hometown:
Burlington, North Carolina
Class Information:
Room Number: 20A
Students per Class: 7
Class Description:
I teach in a separate setting classroom for children with moderate to severe autism. Though each child in my class has autism, each one is unique. Some of my children are non-verbal, some are hyper-verbal. There is a wide range of IQs in my classroom. Each child has challenges in the areas of communication and social interaction, but they face these challenges bravely and they make me proud to be their teacher.
Position:
EC Teacher
Needs:
We need a SMART Board with a projector and lap top. We also need more desk tops for student use. Touch screens would be useful for those students who have fine motor difficulties.
My Philosophy:
I believe that all children can learn, but not children learn at the same pace or in the same way. As a teacher it is my responsibility to find the key that unlocks the potential of each child. As a teacher of children with special needs, I believe that no child is defined by the label on his file. Each child, regardless of his or her "disability" is a complex and unique individual with strengths and talents that deserve to be nourished even as his or her special needs are addressed. Finally,I believe that teaching in a public school is both an honor and a patriotic duty because I believe that public education is the best hope for our nation.

Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I believe in public education. I believe it is the best way to assure the brightest future for all children and for our nation.I teach because public education is the best evidence that we really do believe that all men are great equal. I teach because I love America. I teach because of the amazing opportunity it gives me to make in the lives of children. Mine may be the only kind or encouraging word they hear all day. I may be the only one who tells them they can when the rest of the world tells them they never will. I teach because my heart won't let me do anything less.
