St Bernadette School
Class Information:
Room Number: 205
Class Description:
THIS LIST IS NOT JUST FOR THE COMPUTER LAB. THIS LIST IS FOR ALL OF ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC SCHOOL. The St. Bernadette Computer Lab has been evolving from a room where students play computer games to relieve boredom to a place where learning is a constant. Our students have utilized our lab for internet research, creating and printing documents, presenting powerpoint presentations with interactive sound and pictures, and so much more. As far as basic technology goes they have used the lab to learn as much as they can about computers. From how basic hardware functions to how binary data becomes the things they love to do online. They have even begun blogging about the latest technology of their choice and are creating websites using straight HTML code. We are using our lab to make the most of technology here at St. B's!
Position:
Tech Teacher
Needs:
While we are making the most of technology at St. Bernadette Catholic School, we are in dire need of new equipment. We are able to sustain ourselves on donations (both monetary and hardware-wise), but it is not enough. The students do their best work on slow and outdated machines. Our computer desks are folding tables that bow under the weight of the computer towers and CRT monitors. We have inconsistent hardware making it more difficult for the children to understand, and more difficult for our tech team to repair. While we are grateful for what we have, we are in need of more to make sure that our students have the finest education we can provide them.
My Philosophy:
My personal philosophy with education is to give children more than facts to regurgitate. I love technology and have a hard time containing my enthusiasm even with some of the subjects that are a bit dry. My goal is to share this enthusiasm with each child, and try to show them that technology is helpful and relevant to them. More than that, I want to instill in the students more than a basic knowledge that they can use as computer users in the future workforce of America. I want them to understand how computers work inside and out which is why we study all we can about computers from binary to how graphics cards work to basic code and back again. We want to have students that not only know how computers function, but why they function. My hope is that when students leave our lab at the end of class they leave with at least a little bit more understanding and excitement about technology than when they came in.
Personal Information:
About Me:
My name is Paul Keen. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia where I attended the Cathedral of Christ the King parish, and was a student of Fulton County Public Schools. When I was about 20 I found one of the first jobs I really loved, counseling at a small Episcopalian summer camp in Toccoa, Georgia called Camp Mikell. I spent three summers at Camp Mikell and learned a lot about myself. One thing I learned is the excitement that comes from working with kids. After finishing school at the University of Georgia, I spent a year and a half as a paraprofessional at Whit Davis Elementary in the Athens-Clarke County school district. When it was time to move forward, and time to move on I took the advice of a friend and started looking for a teaching position in the Archdiocese of Denver Catholic school system. Mrs. Roberts was kind enough to give me a job as the P.E. and Tech teacher. While I love physical and health education, I discovered the deep passion I had for working with technology and sharing this excitement with kids. Everyday I love walking into my computer lab, and talking to kids about the amazing world of technology. It's great to be alive!!!
College and Degrees:
BA in History from University of Georgia, Class of 2005.
Activities:
In my free time I enjoy playing music. I can play at least four musical instruments (guitar, bass, drums and piano). I am currently working on mandolin and the Irish whistle. I also collect comic books. I am very fond of the works of Mike Mignola and Alan Moore. I am a huge fan of Batman as well! Aside from all of this I love to learn more about technology. I usually have a book or two in my bag that talks about one aspect of computers or a programming language or whatever.
Favorite Books:
The Bible, anything about computers "for dummies", Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, the Undiscovered Self by Carl Jung and my comics!
Favorite Quotes:
Mark 12:29-34
Interests:
technology, music, movies, comics, baseball and learning more about all of them.
