HP Chromebook 14, $945.00, 0.00% raised
HP Chromebook 14
Single Unit Why I need this:
I use Google Classroom as the vehicle for student assignments and I'm trying to become a paperless classroom. Chromebooks are the perfect tool for students because they are light, relatively inexpensive, and don't need printer drivers. Once I have 1-1 computing, I won't need to print out copies of stories, articles, scoring guides, or directions sheets. Everything will be in Google Classroom! This will be amazing for all of my students, but especially those kids who struggle with organization! No more lost papers!

Class Description:
I have three classes that last for 86 minutes, in a two-hour block of English/language arts. I break that period up into a variety of activities: grammar mini-lesson, independent reading, conferencing about reading or writing, writing technique practice, socratic seminars, vocabulary games and activities, etc. All of my writing assignments are posted in Google Classroom, but I'd like to make this an even more dominant part of my curriculum as soon as possible by going paperless.
Position:
Teacher/ English/language arts
Needs:
My class needs at least 5 Chromebooks, so that we can reach our goal of becoming a paperless classroom. I can't wait until I can do away with those great stacks of short stories, articles, and handouts that end up getting recycled at the end of every term...you wouldn't believe the waste! With Chromebooks, every article, short story, and directions sheet will be online instead. Currently, I'm doing both paper and digital because we don't have enough technology for 1-1 computing.
My Philosophy:
Students learn through active engagement. (I do too!) Kids need up-to-date technology in the classroom so that school seems as relevant to them as the rest of their lives. This doesn't mean that every minute of school has to be as exciting as a videogame, but we have to realize that we are competing with some high tech distractions. We need to make books exciting by having them check out blogs and author websites, as well as videochat with authors and other readers. Kids can be even more literate than previous generations, but we do need to realize that being literate in today's world involves the world of technology as well as paper books.

About Me:
I'm a 20+ veteran teacher and a mom of two middle schoolers, so it never ends! My husband is a principal of an alternative high school. He has a simply magic effect on both kids and parents; I'm always in awe of how good he is! Both my BA and my MA are in English. I have written some historical fiction and would like to write a novel for teens one day. I love my job because I love to talk, laugh, and share with people, plus, I have such fun-loving colleagues who love to learn. I have lots of hobbies including camping, cooking, gardening, traveling when I can, photography, and collecting antiques. I love putting together the end of the year slideshow; I try to represent every student, especially getting candid shots of them that they don't expect! I sponsored the yearbook club for many years, as well as other clubs and activities including a newspaper club and a creative writing club. Last year, I got roped into sponsoring a Dungeons and Dragons club which is an activity about which I know practically nothing! However, I had a student who had been home-schooled his entire life, and he was really struggling to connect with kids at our school. He begged me to start this club, and it's really taken off! Now, we have at least 15 solid members, most of whom have special needs like autism. These are kids who have struggled to connect with others, and the D&D club provides a place for them to come together and make new friends. I still don't quite understand the game, but I'm getting to know some awesome kids!

Why Do I Teach?:
I teach to spread my influence in a positive way, to help the world become a more compassionate, more literate, and more positive place...one kid at a time. I also teach simply because it's an active and fun way to interact creatively with young people. It keeps me young and I laugh at work every day.
