Scroggins Elementary School
Hometown:
Houston, Texas
Class Information:
Room Number: 103
Students per Class: 23
Class Description:
I have 23 bilingual, at - risk kindergarten children. Many of them come from low income families in which English is the second language. The students are eager to come to school and don't seem to realize that the challenges they are facing are often daunting. They get so excited when they get to learn interactively with technology. Unfortunately, because there is only one computer for them to use they don't often get the opportunity to use technology for interactive learning.
Position:
Bilingual Teacher
Needs:
We need more technology for the children to use for exploring the world and learning kindergarten objectives. We need iPads so the children can use learning apps to practice their lessons, learn about the world, and have a chance to use technology.
My Philosophy:
I don’t believe learning can be forced on someone. “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink.” I believe learning occurs naturally in the learner when a teacher has presented the material in a way that works for the learner. I also believe it’s the teacher’s responsibility to do that. I could write a lot about this but I also see children as having natural rights to be treated with dignity and respect and that figures into my teaching. There isn’t one word that would encapsulate my philosophy of teaching.
Personal Information:
College and Degrees:
I graduated from the University of Houston Downtown with a Bachelor of Science and major in InterdisciplinaryStudies.
Activities:
I enjoy reading, bike riding, and cooking.
Employment History:
I worked for an early childhood intervention program for 4 years. I enjoyed working for the program because I had an opportunity to work with children from birth to 3 years old that had disabilities. This is my first year working as a kindergarten bilingual teacher at Scroggins Elementary School.
Why Do I Teach?:
I teach because I love children and making a difference. I also love to learn, which I continually do each day along with my students. I love seeing each child's personality come alive in my classroom. I teach because I love making a positive impact. I teach for the children, but also because I love how rewarding being an educator makes me feel.
